Nafessa Williams

Her Big-Screen Style!

We’re willing to bet you know actress Nafessa Williams from her hit role on The CW’s superhero series Black Lightning! But beyond the small-screen, you can also catch the beauty in the action-crime drama Black and Blue, which hits theaters today! In this SBH exclusive interview we chatted with Nafessa to get the behind-the-scenes look at her on-screen mane moves…

Tell us about your new movie, Black and Blue?
The film is about a rookie cop, [played by Naomie Harris], who witnesses a murder on her body cam and she’s doing everything in her power to get [justice for it]. I play a childhood best friend of that cop who pretty much did not get out of the circumstance that she was raised in; she’s caught up in a lot of gang related activities happening in the neighborhood.

How do you wear your hair for the film?
I’m wearing braids—straight-back cornrows. They’re a light brown color. Deon Taylor [the movie’s director] had a couple ideas of what he wanted and he felt like the cornrows would serve the character well. And, I think the cornrows straight back was a good visual telling the story of the character

How were the braids created?
Someone on set braided my hair [and] we added extensions. I kept it in for a couple of days and as it got older we would tighten it up. My character isn’t too well put together, so they weren’t super-neat braids…My character is from, and living in, the projects.

How did you take care of your Natural hair while filming?
The health of my hair is really important to me. I grew up working at a hair salon. So, I know a great deal about hair. I made sure I had my hair trimmed every six to eight weeks, made sure that I’m deep conditioning and made sure I’m even combing my hair the proper way. Also, when you’re taking weaves out, wigs off and braids out, there is a proper way to do it to make sure you’re not damaging your hair.

Kerry Washington’s Emmy 2019 Skin & Makeup Secrets…

Actress Kerry Washington looked flawless on the recent Emmy red carpet. Here the star’s makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez, spills the details about Kerry’s glam skin and makeup look for the awards show:

SKIN PREP SECRETS: “I always like to begin makeup application with a fresh clean face. I start by cleansing and hydrating Kerry’s skin with the new Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleansing Towelettes and applying Hydro Boost Water Gel to boost hydration, lock in moisture and nourish skin. This is a great gel cream that can be used as a primer before makeup application. It hydrates while creating a smooth canvas to achieve flawless skin. I apply it all over the face and then proceed to moisturizing the lips with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Treatment, and leave it on until lipstick application. I blot the lip with tissue paper and apply the desired lip shade.”

FACE PERFECTION: “Once the Hydro Boost Water Gel is absorbed on the skin, I begin makeup application. My first makeup application step is to highlight and conceal imperfections wherever needed with Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer in Deep, which is the shade that compliments Kerry’s skin tone. I apply it under the eye area to conceal any darkness and highlight certain areas of the face where I want light to reflect. These areas are: under eye, nose bridge, center chin, and center of forehead. To create an even skin tone on Kerry, I used Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup in Cocoa. This foundation is one of my favorites, it truly makes the skin glow, gives great coverage, it’s long lasting and creates a healthy complexion without having to use any additional enhancers on the skin. It’s the perfect match to Kerry’s skin tone, and makes her skin look flawless all day long. I apply it all over her face and blend with a round brush in a circular motion for a smoother and more natural application. Right after the foundation, I always like to apply the blush on the apple of the cheeks and blend upward towards the temples.”

STELLAR MAKEUP: “For this look, I used Neutrogena Essential Cheek Palette by Kerry Washington in Captivating. My inspiration for the eyes was Bridget Bardot’s winged cat eye with a modern graphic edge and a twist of Rock & Roll. To create the shape for the eye, I used Neutrogena Precision Liquid Eyeliner and outlined it first, and then filled it in with the same eyeliner. I then lined the water rim with Neutrogena Intense Gel Eyeliner and went over the areas that needed more coverage. To enhance and intensify the eye, I glued Ardell’s 3D Faux Mink Lashes 859 on top lashes, and applied a few coats of the amazing Neutrogena Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara for thickness and volume to top and bottom lashes.  I accentuated Kerry’s eyebrows with Neutrogena Nourishing Brow Pencil in Brown. I always finish the look with the lipstick, and the shade for today’s look is lip liner layered with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Lip Shine in Radiant Rose.”

Angela Bassett’s Emmy 2019 Big, Bold Curls…

Celebrity hairstylist Randy Stodghill crafted a cool, curly look for actress Angela Bassett’s red-carpet appearance at the 71st Emmy Awards. He created a half pompadour and big burst of curls to complement her Antonio Grimaldi off-the-shoulder caped pantsuit and Pat McGrath makeup by D’Andre Michael.

Here, Randy shares the step by step to get the 9-1-1 leading lady’s look!

STEP 1: “To create Angela’s look for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards we were feeling an homage to big hair of the ’70s,” says Stodghill. “Hair was first prepped using the Ouidad Curl ImmersioN No-Lather Coconut Cream Cleansing Conditioner, leaving the hair soft and manageable.”

STEP 2: After brushing out the damp hair he then prepped tresses with a styling primer/daily conditioner. “Next, as the hair was still wet, I went through the roots to the ends using Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel, giving me locked-in defined curls,” notes the hair pro.

STEP 3: To finish, mane texture is “scrunched” and finished with a dry oil mist to give it added shine and moisture.
