NE-YO WELCOMES US

…Into The “World Of Dance”—And Shares A Unique Grooming Secret

R&B singer/actor/dancer Ne-Yo chatted with Sophisticate’s Black Hair during a visit to Chicago to promote “World of Dance”—NBC’s new dance competition premiering May 30th (Tuesdays, 10/9c)—where he’ll be judging along with the show’s executive producer Jennifer Lopez and professional dancer Derek Hough. And, did we mention that the grand prize was a cool $1 million?

SBH: What inspired your involvement with “World of Dance?”
NE-YO: First and foremost, dancers infamously are not paid as well…And the dancers, nine times out of ten, are working hard—if not harder—than the artist they’re dancing behind. They never get the spotlight, they never get the recognition or the compensation properly deserved.

SBH: As a judge, are you going to go easy or hard on the competitors?
NE-YO: I’ve already been dubbed the “difficult” judge and I don’t mind. I look at it like this: It’s a million dollars, this is going to change someones life, so I’m not going to just “give” it to anybody—you have to earn it. And if you’re not here to earn it, then why are you here? I’m just making sure everyone is on top of their game.

SBH: Style, as in dance and fashion, is really important. How would you describe your style?
NE-YO: Comfortable, classy and smooth. I dress for comfort but at the same time I am very much aware of what I look like and what that means in society.

SBH: Any grooming tips you’d like to share?
NE-YO: In a pinch I can do it myself—like this is a pretty easy “hairstyle” to maintain. I use T-Edjer by Andis; I use it for my entire head. You’ll notice I have no mustache today. Let me let you on in a little secret: Whenever you don’t see me with a mustache, it means I tried to line it up and failed—and had to cut it off. If it’s there [the mustache] I did it right, if it’s not I did it way wrong.
