Weave Couture

SATINY SMOOTH
HAGERSTOWN, MD

Shakena Warren of Combs-N-Clips Beauty in Hagerstown, MD, works with 16″ extensions to create a sleek silhouette.

Weave 1 Weave 2 Weave 3

Transform from day to night with ease thanks to this totally chic silhouette! Natural strands are braided down before a weave cap is attached. Using a pack and a half of 16″ hair extensions in a dark brown shade, the extensions are sewn in to the weaving cap, starting at the nape and working upwards. Once the weave is closed in a circular pattern at the crown, a full fringe is cut with clippers. A light spray oil is applied to hands and applied throughout the hair. Going section by section, a ceramic flat iron smoothes extensions, helping to lock in moisture.

REAL-WEAR TIPS

Weave guru and celebrity stylist Anthony Cherry offers up great information about weave selection and maintenance…

INVEST IN QUALITY HAIR “Each time you have your weave re-done, you can use the wefts up to a year if you invest in quality hair extensions and take care of them properly,” affirms Cherry.

CONSIDER LENGTH “The longer the extensions, the more expensive they’re going to be,” explains the weave pro. “Anything over 12″ may cost over $150 a pack.”

Talk back to SBH at “Weave Couture”

  1. Marlene says:

Hi, I was thinking about getting a weave but this would be my first. I thought about going straight to sew-in’s, but my friends warned me that I should start off with braids, so I can get used to how it feels before i spend a lot of money on something I might end taking out the next day.

    • SBH says:

Hi Marlene: Set up a consultation with a professional weaver and tell the hair pro this is your first time getting a weave. The stylist will be able to explain all your options so you can make the best decision possible.

  2. Mimi says:

I have just changed from wearing weaves to micro-bead individual human hair extensions by Qlassy Hair. They have done wonders for my hair, it has grown 4in. in only months and my hair is thick and frizzy when not straightened and hasn’t grown in about 7 years. The product uses no glue and I am able to wash my scalp and hair as often as i want, they lasted for about 5 1/2 months and were thick and pretty. Because i could wash my hair I did and i got amazing results. But I was always told that washing so much is not good for black hair, has this just been a miracle or does the real deal for hair growth, start at the root??

    • SBH says:

Hi Mimi: Everyone’s hair is different so you have to find a haircare regimen that works for you…and it sounds like you have! As for hair growth, it’s all about taking care of your hair–and your body. As long as you’re cleansing and conditioning your hair, eating right and drinking plenty of water, you’ll see results.

  3. catina claytor says:

What the best huges for my fairskin when it comes to picking weave and i have a ovalshape face and what are some styles that i can rock! Iam in may late 30s. Also my daughter has off black hair and she is fairskin to and she wants to go red or blonde the red she has didnt show up as much what is the best hair color for her

    • SBH says:

Hi Catina: Set up a consultation with professional stylists and take your daughter along for the meeting. The hair pro can take a closer look at your skin tone and face shape and determine the best style and color options for both of you! And don’t forget to consider texture when choosing a weave. Make sure your hair’s natural texture blends with the texture of the weave.

  4. Taya says:

Hi I live in Scotland and would like to get good info from a professional since there aren’t that many people of my race up here. Well, every time I put on a weave I get a very itchy scalp often resulting in me taking antihistamines to calm the situation. Should I wash my weaves before application to remove chemicals? what with? Is there a better brand? I normally use sensationnel premium products but will be using the bump collection next week. Would you recommend the best oil for my scalp when the weave is on too, as I find it to be dry and build dandruff.

    • SBH says:

Hi Taya: One of the most important aspects of weave wear is caring for the scalp underneath the weave. Try developing a weekly regimen of carefully cleansing your scalp using very warm water. If you must use oil, be careful not to use too much, as the oil could become trapped between the tracks. The trick is to use a bottle that has a spout and apply the oil in small drops to the areas that are the most dry. If dryness and dandruff persists, you may want to consult a dermatologist.

  5. kadie says:

Hi I’ve never worn a weave! I never really had the desire to wear one but now I’m all for it!! The reason I changed is because I want something different! I want more fullness and I also want to give my natural hair a break from daily maintenance! My hair type is very thick and kinky! I do use perms but my hair still tends to keep a kinky texture! What type of hair do you reccomend I use for my hair!

    • SBH says:

Hi Kadie: When choosing a weave texture, it is important to find a style that most closely resembles your natural texture so the hair blends well together. You may want to set up a consultation with a professional weaver. The stylist can see your hair up close and personal and recommend the best weave texture that will give you the most natural looking style.

  6. Sandra says:

I have been putting weaves in my hair for over 10 years using just the glue in method. Now I am 40 years old and I have a lot of bald spots as well as very thin hair. I would still like to wear sewn in weaves now, but I need to know if this will further damage my hair because it’s so weak that it even breaks off from individual braids. Please help!

    • SBH says:

Hi Sandra: You may want to schedule a consultation with a professional weaver. The stylist can take a closer look at your hair’s texture and help you decide which hair look is best for you.

  7. Schennel says:

I put weaves in all the time, but im looking for a new brand that does not knot up so easily. I usually have to bring a comb with me everywhere to come them out. I use the New York premium .Do you have any suggestions of different brands i can try? Anything that will not Knot up.

    • SBH says:

Hi Schennel: Click on the “Contests & Promotions” button to the right. There, you’ll find some great product choices for weave wear.

  8. kia says:

okay i do my mom’s hair all the time she was wearing sew-in weaves. then we gave it a rest and her hair grew long so then she went to a hair school and got an relaxer and semi permanent color put in and after that it broke off so bad, now it’s short and so we are back putting sew-in weave in her hair to make it grow back. what happened? can you help me.

    • SBH says:

Hi Kia: Breakage may be caused by many factors. One of them includes not replacing the natural moisture that has been removed during the chemical process. Add moisture by adhering to a weekly hair cleansing schedule and getting regular hot oil treatments or deep-conditioning treatments. Also, consult a professional stylist before performing chemical services. They need to be done in a timely manner and a tress expert will know how to relax and color the hair without over-processing.

  9. Koya says:

How am I supposed to wash a full-closure sew-in weave so that it not only cleans the hair strands, but benefits my scalp too?

    • SBH says:

Hi Koya: Visit soon for answer to your weave/scalp cleansing query!

    • SBH says:

Hi Koya: Celebrity weave expert Dr. Boogie has an answer for you. Allow hot water (as hot as you can stand it) to run thoroughly through your scalp so you flush out some of the oils.

  10. valarie says:

What is the best way to take care of synthetic hair or wigs to keep them looking fresh.

    • SBH says:

Hi Valarie: We answered your question posted in the Ask A Stylist section. Check out the Sept./Oct. issue of SBH (with Zoe Saldana on the cover) and you’ll find the answer to your color query in a feature called “Reality Hair Forum.”
