SHIMMERING SPIRALS
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC
Ange Kovako of Upscale Hair Salon in North Charleston, SC, uses sew-in hair extensions to create a voluminous style.
These delicate spirals are the perfect balance between tight curls and ultra-loose waves. Strands are braided into cornrows to prepare for a sew-in weave application, leaving tresses out on top to keep the look more natural. A sewing net is applied over cornrows and off-black 18-inch virgin Indian extensions are sewn in. Extensions are then razored around the face, with shears used to layer the back. Softening spirals with a brush creates a wavy look, while a flat iron is used to smooth crown lengths. A light oil sheen and holding spray are used to finished coif.

REAL-WEAR TIPS
Weave guru and celebrity stylist Dr. Boogie offers up great information about weave selection and maintenance…
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TEXTURE “Get hair the matches your hair texture,” comments Dr. Boogie. “It boils down to picking the texture that blends with your own hair.”
TREAT YOUR TRESSES “When you have a weave and your hair is braided up underneath, it’s very important you take that opportunity to oil your scalp—especially if your edges are thin or pulled back,” explains the weave expert.

I work at a gym and I also workout / run alot. Due to that I sweat so much and I cannot keep styles in that long. I really need a hair makeover so that I can still work, workout /run, and still look beautiful! I am considering a weave. (I do not want any more weave pnoy tails though.) Do you recommend a sew in (& if so- a few tracks or whole head), bond weave, wig, etc.? I want something that will be really pretty and yet still last due to my job and active lifestyle. Thank you for any advice!
Good question, Faye…stay tuned for an answer!
Hi Faye: If you want a polished, long-lasting hairstyle that looks good during your workout sessions, a sew-in weave one option. With a full sew-in weave, you only need to focus on your edges as opposed to your entire head. Extensions in a wavy/curly texture will give you the most versatility. Keep in mind no matter what style you choose, you will get less wear out of it than you would if you didn’t lead an active lifestyle. If the style normally lasts four to six weeks, therefore plan on regular salon visits once a month.
Thank you SBH for your help and info! I really appreciate it and needed it!….. May I ask one more question please: regarding extensions, are you referring to bonding the weave with glue or another method? Thank you very much again!
Hello everyone….I need help. I have shoulder length fine thin hair. My hair stylist did a sew in for me (3 tracks) to make my hair appear fuller. However, you could see the tracks through my hair. My hair is so fine. I loved the look but I could not take the tracks showing especially in the sunlight. ugh! Unfortunately I can’t do a full weave due to I have extremely dry scalp. I want to try it again but I dont want to have the same outcome. Any suggestions, I need help bad…..thanks
Looking into it Simp40!
HiSimp40: In order for your hair extensions to blend well with your hair, select pieces that closely match your hair’s texture. With that in mind, remember that weaves are never a solution for fine, thinning, breaking or damaged hair. Have you considered wearing a wig? Wigs give you plenty of styling options, especially when you want to add volume. Remember to moisturize the hair underneath the wig by getting deep-conditioning treatments at least twice a month to lock in all the natural oils.
I have a weave, but I’m not 100% sure how to keep it up (ex: what can I put in it, how long can I wear a weave, etc.) Your response is greatly appreciated. Thank you
Yoli :)
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again…All the info you need to upkeep your coif once you step out of the salon should have been detailed to you before you had the weave put in. All your questions about upkeep/maintenance should have been reviewed prior to styling. That being said, schedule a follow-up appointment with your weaver to get the info on how to maintain your particular style. And, check out the pages of SBH for some terrific weave maintenance tips you can do on your own.
I really like Iman’s hairstyles. I think they are terrific for any adult age. I would love to have my hair weaved to one of her longer lenghts. I especially like the hairstyle that she weares down and parted in the middle. Can you please tell me how can I achieve this Imans hairstyle? My hair is thin so I would have weave it. Thanks for your help.
We’ll look into an answer for you Cherrie !
Hi cherrie: Celebrity hair pro and weave expert Oscar James has styled Iman’s fabulous locks. To replicate those gorgeous waves, James suggests wrapping the hair around a medium curling iron and using your fingers (rather than a brush) to gently loosen the curls and form soft flowing waves.
My sister is 12 years old,she wants a sew in and is going to get one before she gores back to school so how long do u think she should have it and she has natrual hair do you think a full weave or with the peremeter out.
It depends on how well she takes care of her own hair without extensions. That will determine if u want to leave her hair out or not and you want to leave her hair up anywhere from 1-3months. with a good wash and condition in between.
We love the look of weaves bria but it’s important to know how to properly care for and be willing to invest in the time it takes to upkeep a weave. At 12, your sister should know exactly what she’s in for with a weave design and it’s best she get a full consultation with the weaver who is doing her look–getting all the info the how-tos for proper mane care. Rather than going for a full weave, perhaps it would be better for your 12-year-old sister to try clip-in pieces…They’re easy to use and easy to remove–and will give her the style boost she’s looking for.
i wanted to get a indian body wave remi in a 1b =] but i can’t decide between a side part and a middle part. but im leaning more toward a side part, anyways i would like to know how the both work ; i.e braiding pattern weaving all that. Also my natural bangs are short so with a side part is it possible for them to add extensions in the bangs?
We’re checking in on this for you Kimberly Joseph…Stay tune!
Hi kimberly joseph : For your answer, we chatted up celebrity hairstylist Kimberly Kimble (she works with Beyonce, Mary J. Blige). Here’s her words of hair wisdom just for you:
I recommend leaving some of the hair out of the top so you have the option to wear a side part OR a middle part. Then add clip-in extensions to the top, as appropriate, for each look. However, you should also consider your face shape. If you have a long face or a protruding forehead, I don’t recommend a middle part–a side part works best. If you have a round or oval face, you can wear either part as long as the hair is a
nice length. For your bangs, I suggest adding clip-in extensions.
HI, I have been doing sew in weave into my teeenage daughters hair and i just wanted to know exactly whats the best way to braid the hair underneath to give it that natural full look?
I always like to braid it in a circular pattern..starting around the hair line make a thin braid going around the head forming a circle…keep going in this pattern… the closer you get to the center your braids should become thicker once you have completed that you should have one single braid at the top of the head sow it down to the already braided hair then begin sowing the hair
Is it bad to put your weave in with glue instead of sewing it in?
Hi lamekia brown: When done correctly, bonding is a weave technique that can create some gorgeous results. However, it’s in the removal process where damage may occur due to incorrect removal techniques.
well let me strart by saying i really mess my hair up. it’s very very dry. and it takes months for it to grow a inch. i love my weaves but sometimes you can get a person that really don’t no what the HELL they are doing. you still can see the braids & it be very lump up looks like a old lady wig. please help me out.
Sorry to hear about your less than terrific weave experience Gloria It sounds like you need to get with a truly skilled weave artist. Peruse the SBH and check out the credit lines for some of the weave stylists featured in the magazine who may be located near you. Also, keep in mind that you get what you pay for…So, it may be that a skillful weave artist’s work will cost more; but the result will be truly professional weave style which not only looks great but will also help preserve your hair underneath. Best of luck.
I will like to know is the hair maisha oliver has in..silky straight?
