Actress/comedian Tiffany Haddish rocks “Black Girls Rock 2017” red carpet.

Celebrity hairstylist Oscar James

Actress/comedian Tiffany Haddish is on a red-hot roll—thanks to her TV stint on The Carmichael Show, the hit summer movie Girls Trip and her recent stand-up special on Showtime. Likewise, this talented beauty knows what it takes to rule the red carpet when it comes to her coif: a skilled hair pro and great products! Tiffany had both when she did Presenter duties at the recent BET “Black Girls Rock 2017” telecast and enlisted celebrity hair pro Oscar James, who used Mielle Organics Edge Control, to style her up for the event. Here, we get the exclusive styling info on Tiffany’s “Black Girls Rock 2017” look direct from the star stylist himself…

SBH: How did you begin working with Tiffany Haddish?
Oscar James: I did Regina Hall for the Girls Trip movie and Tiffany saw me doing Regina’s hair. When we finished the movie and Tiffany was asked to do a project with Tracy Morgan she was like, “I want you to do my hair.” And I was like, “Sure!”

SBH: You used Mielle Organics Edge Control to style Tiffany’s hair for “Black Girls Rock 2017.” What is that you love about the product?
Oscar James: I was introduced to Mielle Organics by Regina Hall, because Regina loves trying new products. So I went to do Regina for the press for Girls Trip…and she pulls out this Mielle Organics Edge Control and I never felt anything like it. I love it because it goes on kind of matte so it’s not super shiny. There’s something about the weight of it it that just weighs down Natural hair effortlessly.

Hair pro Oscar James puts the finishing touches on Tiffany’s coif with the help of Mielle Organics Edge Control.

SBH: Tell us about how you styled Tiffany for “Black Girls Rock 2017?”
Oscar James: She had this elaborate updo with braids and it was parted in three sections. I wanted to work with that because I wanted to keep the natural theme—because it was “Black Girls Rock” and her dress had different patterns. I didn’t want the hair to compete with what she was wearing. I worked with the braids she already had and I just reparted them. So, instead of three parts, I did two parts. If you look at it from the side it looks like it was parted in three sections. And then I did two tight knots to give it a great base. I brushed it up and used a little holding spray with the heat from a blow dryer to keep it really slick, because her hair is pretty long. I wanted to make sure everything stayed up effortlessly. So, I used a holding spray and then used heat from the blow dryer to set it and then I went in with the Mielle Organics Edge Control.

I also pressed her edges with a hot comb. You can only get so close with a pressing comb, you always have just a little bit of hair that’s not super straight—so that’s what I use the Mielle Organics Edge Control on and it just lays it down and makes it seamless.

The secret style weapon!

SBH: What style effect were you going for with her look?
Oscar James: I wanted to create a Mohawk affect with it. So, I shaped the braid and pinned them into place. I wanted to do it because it’s effortless. I wasn’t able to go with her to the event so I wanted something that she would look flawless in all night.

SBH: Can you share a tip for using edge gel?
Oscar James: I think you get the best results with edge gel when it’s applied at night, or early in the morning while you’re getting ready, and put a scarf over it. It will lay down like pressed hair. If you give it a great brushing with a bristle brush and tie it down, it will be like you got your hair pressed. You’ll be amazed.
