SBH Exclusive! Q&A With Actress Emayatzy Corinealdi

It’s an epic story that touched our lives. Beginning tonight, and airing over four consecutive nights on History, A&E and Lifetime (9/8c), the re-imagined version of “Roots” will unfold to both entertain and inspire. The mini series features Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Anika Noni Rose and Emayatzy Corinealdi among its stellar cast.

Here actress Emayatzy Corinealdi, who takes on the role of “Belle,” shared her thoughts about the classic saga and divulged some of her best hair care secrets exclusively with SBH

How does it feel to be involved in such an iconic project as “Roots”?
At this time in history, I can’t be more humbled to be a part of the story of “Roots.” It means so much to me as an actress, as a Black woman and as a person who calls America home.

Please share some of your thoughts regarding your role as “Belle.”
“Belle” represents the women of that time who had to embody the strength, the dignity and the grace to endure such a challenging time in our history.

How would you describe your current hairstyle?
I’m currently wearing my hair Natural, which is a first for me since I was about 13. I’ve had a relaxer for majority of my life and I was initially interested in going Natural after watching the Chris Rock’s documentary, “Good Hair.” And finally, I was able to do it recently. It is a definitely a change for me from my short pixie that I’d become so accustomed to, but I wanted to see what my Natural hair actually looked like. It had been too long.

Do you have a favorite hair care tip you’d like to share with SBH readers?
Moisture. Moisture. Moisture. Moisturizing is essential for me because without it my hair has more of a tendency to break, and Natural hair really does love moisture.

What is your “hair philosophy?”
My hair philosophy is to do what I feel works for me, regardless of what the “rules” may be. This Natural journey is a new look for me and I just want to embrace my God-given texture and have fun with it. I do think hair is great to experiment with.
