Between his iconic roles on shows like Sister, Sister and The Parkers we’re willing to bet you’re familiar with actor Dorien Wilson! Here, the leading man talks to Sophisticate’s Black Hair about his hot series In The Cut, which is currently airing its third season, and more!
How did you get into acting?
I think I’ve been acting since the 6th grade, I did my first play in 7th. I went to a training school called, Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts and moved to the Bay Area and I kept flying back and forth to L.A. for auditions. I did the waiter and bartender thing for like six months and landed my first role as a series regular on a show called Dream On, on HBO, for six six years. As I was doing Dream On I was doing Sister, Sister at the same time.
Tell us about In The Cut and your character “Jay.”
I play “Jay Weaver,” who is a proprietor of a barbershop and a beauty salon, along with his ex-wife played by Jackée [Harry]. We don’t get along too well but we have to run the business. [On day] I get a knock on my door and there’s a young man [and I] find out I have a son. So it’s all about getting to know this young man and the relationships we develop, how to parent a grown man. John Marshall Jones plays my sidekick in the barbershop. People know him as the father from Smart Guy. We added Kellita Smith to the show this year as a regular; she played the wife on The Bernie Mac Show. She’s very beautiful, very funny. A lot of new things happen this season and you’ll have to stay tuned to watch.
You play a barber on In The Cut…Do you cut your own hair at home?
Oh no, no, no. We don’t do that anymore. I leave it up to the professionals. I just have to give props to our barber on the show because I have never been to a barber as proficient as he is. His name is Denny, we call him Denny the Barber.
