3 Secrets About MJB’s “Thick Of It” Hairstyle

SBH Exclusive!

Raise your hand if you’re thrilled the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul” is back! On the road (with Maxwell, no less, on the “King + Queen of Hearts World Tour”) and on the music charts (with the single Thick Of It) singer Mary J. Blige rules. Oh, and don’t forget the style scene: MJB also has that arena on lockdown thanks to a hot new cut and color crafted by celebrity hairstylist, and “L.A. Hair” reality TV star Kim Kimble. In this Sophisticate’s Black Hair exclusive, Mary’s mane woman breaks down the three style secrets that make this look one of the singer’s hottest hair moves to date…

  1. THE SEXY SHAPE is what hair pro Kimble describes as a “bowl cut.” The silhouette hugs the contours of Mary’s face while brow-brushing bangs and gently curved ends reinforce the rounded shape.
  2. THE SLEEK TEXTURE is crafted with a special flat iron—one Kim Kimble developed which holds a special cartridge containing argan oil. As the hair is heat styled, a bit of oil is dispensed and helps to create silky looking hair. Kimble reveals the iron is schedule to debut on HSN in December.
  3. THE COLOR you’re seeing has a surprise: There’s a tinge of copper nestled among the gold to give this hue extra depth and radiance. (That’s what contributes to making this look glow.) Kimble used Goldwell and Wella colors to craft the high-lift blonde paired with darker roots in a technique she dubs ombre-balayage.
