It was a magical evening for Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o when she won the “Best Supporting Actress” category. But we knew she was a winner the minute she stepped onto that red carpet—thanks to her fabulous glam squad! One member of that talented crew is Larry Sims, the celebrity hair pro who created Lupita’s coif for her big night! Here, he reveals to Sophisticate’s Black Hair exclusive behind-the-scenes details about the star’s gorgeous style silhouette…

Celebrity hair pro Larry Sims created Lupita Nyong’o’s Academy Awards coif. Bravo!

“We though she looked like a princess in the dress, but the [18K yellow gold and diamond] headband did not come into the equation until the night before the Oscars,” celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims reveals. “We had seen so many dresses, but as the weeks went by, the dress options became fewer and fewer. And in my mind, I knew that it was probably one of three dresses. I had come up with a look that would work for all three; but, literally the night before the Oscars, her wardrobe stylist introduced me to the Fred Leighton headband and I decided to throw my idea out the window and free-style it. I fell in love with the headband—it was a gem of a piece. It was an all-diamond headband that was finished in gold hardware and I thought it would be the icing on the cake. We kind of created [the look] as we went.”

“To create the looser texture and a more defined curl in her hair, I used Go Pro Curls Gelle Parfait on damp hair, diffused it, and pulled it out with a pick to add curl, volume and definition,” details hair pro Sims. “I knew I was gong to want to push her hair back with the headband, so I wanted the texture in front to be smoother. I pressed it out with a hot comb and smoothed it with a crème oil—I also used that on the sides of the hair as well to keep it really shiny. I continued to create the shape and held it in place with hairspray.”

“Lupita is a fashion muse and she trusts me, which is so refreshing for me as a hairstylist and as a creative person,” declares Sims. “She’s more of a risk taker than other people I’ve had the opportunity to work with. She completely collaborates, gives her opinion and knows exactly what she wants—but at the same time, she asks me as well.”
