CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER
The late Rosa Parks was widely recognized as the “Mother of the Freedom Movement” for her courageous act of civil disobedience, when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus. Parks was arrested and fined $14 for her refusal, but her protest led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott—a demonstration that elevated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to national importance and sparked the historic Civil Rights Movement. “I did not get on the bus to get arrested. I had no idea that history was being made. I was just tired of giving in. When I made that decision, I knew I had the strength of my ancestors with me.”
