We’re still amazed by all the gorgeous hairstyles spotted at the recent Emmy Awards red carpet. One look in particular, a soft updo worn by “Orange Is the New Black” star Laverne Cox caught our eye. The mane pro behind the look: Celebrity Stylist Ursula Stephen. “I most definitely wanted to give Laverne Cox a standout look on the Emmy red carpet,” said the mane pro. “She has not done an ‘up’ hair style and this was the perfect moment.” Here, Ursula reveals her moves for crafting Laverne’s coif:

A peek behind-the-scenes of Ursula Stephen (standing) creating her mane masterpiece on actress Laverne Cox.

STEP 1: “To start, I sprayed the hair with Motions Light Working Spritz, then curled the entire head of hair with a 1″ curling iron. Spraying the hair prior to curling sets the curls and allows them to last longer. Once I finished curling the entire head, I brushed out the curls, and then teased the back portion of the head, then smoothed to eliminate frizz.”

STEP 2: “To style, I split the hair down the middle into two sections. Taking the right side, I then divided the half head of hair into about four smaller sections. Apply a small amount of pomade to each section to smooth and eliminate frizz.”

STEP 3: “Now here’s the fun part! Taking the section furthest from the middle, the one closet to the right ear, I twisted the hair in the shape of a half circle, pinned it leaving the bottom half of the curl hanging.”

STEP 4: “Taking the bottom half of the curl from piece one, and adding it to piece two (directly next to it), I twisted the hair back and pinned again. And I did this for the subsequent sections, each time leaving the hanging piece to connect to the next piece. As well, the twists began to form the shape a ‘V’ with the hair. The last hanging piece was left in center temporarily.”

STEP 5: “Repeat on the left side. Be sure to have lots of hair pins and bobby pins on hand! With the remaining two middle pieces, I twisted them together and pinned into place. Laverne’s hair was swept away from her face, the style soft and framing her face. Once the entire shape was formed and a few added pins to set the style, I layered three hair sprays to set the style into place, and be sure the hold would last all night.”
