DR. MAE C. JEMISON,
ASTRONAUT, DOCTOR, PROFESSOR
Dr. Mae C. Jemison has always been a high flyer, graduating from high school at just 16 years old before earning both a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. in African and Afro-American Studies from Stanford University, followed by a doctorate degree in Medicine from Cornell University. In 1992, Jemison worked as a Science Mission Specialist on NASA’s STS-47 space shuttle Endeavor, and made history as the first African-American woman to go into space. “Whenever I have problems, I realize that my “in basket” will always be full—and I am not obligated to empty it. In other words, I take some time and imagine how important the problem is to my overall life.”
