For more than a decade, soulful singer Monica has exuded style and talent. With a reality TV series on BET, Monica: Still Standing, fans saw the singer bring her own kind of beauty to us week after week. Here, she shared some of her thoughts on hair, makeup and beauty at our exclusive SBH photo shoot.
“I think you should always reflect your own personal taste when you wear your hair a particular way,” the singer says. Her current cut is longer on top with a little ducktail in the back. “It has a lot of variations; you can wear it spiky, chic or funky,” explains celebrity hairstylist Stacy G.
“The front of my cut is the longest part—that’s where most of my hair is,” Monica explains. “The crown is a lot shorter.” Using a 1-inch flat iron, the star smoothes sections of strands in varying directions before tousling to finish.
On the star’s eyes, makeup pro Christian went for a sweep of gold shadow. “That adds a little more drama,” he explains. On lips, he opted for a bright pink shade. “Monica can definitely wear red, but brighter lip shades like pink are more youthful.”
I have a hair cut kind like Monica’s when she had it short in the back long on one side and short on the other. My hair is thin and I wanted to know what kind of products do Monica put on her hair to lay the short side down? I’ve dried Gel and that doesn’t work too well.
Hi Toshia: Try putting a little product on your hair at night before Wrapping it with a silk scarf. In the morning, touch up your style as needed with a flat iron.
I have a short natural…cut my hair in the beginning of fall and love the short hair.. Now that its 2011 I want something different, looking to do a press and flat ironed look, but want to keep my natural.. Ladies lets embrace our hair and stop using so many chemicals…

Hi Shree: In our exclusive interview with Monica, she tells SBH, “My hair’s texture is soft and a little more curly, so my stylist lays the sides down with Nairobi Foam Wrap. I usually sit under the dryer for 30 minutes to make sure it gets completely dry.”
