After a nationwide search, it came down to three lucky finalists. All were flown to Chicago for three days of beautification with celebrity stylist AJ Johnson, star makeup artist Tia Dantzler and fashion photographer Ernest Collins. The winner—Kelli Shaw—had her photos appear in a print ad for Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil and a special editorial feature in SBH! Here, Kelli shared some of her thoughts on maintaining healthy hair at her exclusive SBH photo shoot.

“After blow-drying, all I really have to do is put in a little bit of the Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion,” Kelli says. “It’s really thick so putting a little bit of that in before flat-ironing is great!”

Kelli’s best hair secret? “Set aside time each week to wash and condition your hair,” she says. “If you Wrap your hair every night after that, in the morning you can take it down and you’re good to go.” This eighth grade math teacher couldn’t help but turn her contest beauty experience into a lesson for her students. “When I go back to school, I am thinking about starting [a program] for the girls and their hair so they can learn better hygiene,” reveals Kelli.
