AMAZING UPDOS

Bring the updo from night to day with effortlessly chic styles that add polish to your everyday look. Try a side braid, ponytail or bun for classy va-va-voom!

PRETTY PLAIT

PRETTY PLAIT

Hey there, red-carpet diva! Warm brown strands are gathered to one side and braided to create a sweet and sexy profile, while voluminous side bangs complete the snip.

Get the look: Natural strands are shampooed, conditioned and blow-dried. Then, 12″, 16″ and 18″ pre-shaded extensions are sewn in, starting at the nape, leaving Natural hair out at the crown and sides. Blonde-shaded extensions act as highlights and added into the top.

FEATHERED PONY

FEATHERED PONY

Long chocolate tresses are pulled to one side and secured in a partial ponytail, leaving ends free for a free spirited take on the classic updo.

Get the look: Natural strands are shampooed and conditioned before being molded. Then, using 12″ and 14″ Remy extensions in a medium brown color, a Quick Weave is bonded in starting at the nape moving toward the crown, which is closed in a circular pattern.

RETRO GLAM

RETRO GLAM

Midnight-shaded tresses are fashioned into an old-school pouf and side braid for a silhouette that’s on the front page of fashion! Copper highlights complete the look.

Get the look: Prior to styling, hair is shampooed and conditioned. Smooth strands are parted into two sections, and crown lengths are shaped over a foam piece to create a retro-glam pouf. Longer tresses at the back are secured and braided at the nape.

  1. Charlene says:

I am 46 and my hair started falling out when I turned 26 it started to itch really bad so I scrached it, oiled it but went to the doctors 2yrs. ago only to be told that my scalp is damanged and the hair won’t grow back!! Now I don’t know what to do ti’s taking a big toll on my social life.

    • SBH says:

Hi Charlene: Continue to consult your doctor and your hairstylist to help your scalp’s condition. One short-term answer to your condition would be to consider wearing wigs. Consult with your stylist and doctor to see if this would be a good option. Good luck.

  2. Emo says:

I really think so too=] I have been searching around the internet for a while today, and its kinda hard to find something good to read on blogs:P Maybe its because there are too much of them around =) But this place actually keeps catching my attention. 3. Dajai says:

Hi My name is Dajai. I have a 1 1/2 year old girl who has very weird hair. Its extremely soft and curly in the front and rather course in the back. What can i apply to her hair to for lack of better words even it out without over-processing it?

    • SBH says:

Hi Dajai: First of all, it’s important to consider your daughter’s hair texture unique and special. Various hair textures can be found on one head of hair. Since your daughter is so young, her hair texture may still be changing and as such it would be best to allow Nature to take its course. If you feel the need to style your child’s coif, please consult a professional stylist.

  4. Kiki Zhane says:

i have exema and it attacks my hair, recently, like, for the last few years we have been able to grow out the areas that were mainly damaged. Now my hair is almost shoulder length but i can’t get it to grow any further, it’s been about a year and it’s still the same length, i did cut my hair to a short style about 3 years ago too. I use Garnier frutis products and they are great at moisturizing my hair but it does nothing to grow it. What can i do to get my hair to grow longer?

    • mscaribbeanma says:

trust me when i say its growing.
how do i know. if your gettin relaxer on the reg. then ur hair is growing. thats calledf new growth thats the partt thats (nappy) for lack of words
the trick is to learn to retain the length thats growing. I suggest visiting an participating in a hair forum site like hairlista.com or black hair media forums

    • SBH says:

Hi Kiki Zhane Start with a healthy foundation (eating right, drinking a lot of water). You may also want to try using hair vitamins, which contain nutrients designed to strengthen your hair. The more durable your strands become, the more likely they are to grow. Consult with a medical professional regarding your situation for future help. And keep checking SBH (our November issue is on sale now!) for more tips on how to maintain healthy hair!

  5. Brooke says:

I have been wearing my hair cut for over a year now, it seems very hard to keep the tapered parts laying flat, even a week after relaxers. I’ve tried slick sticks, edge control, cutting a little shorter (but that looks too short!), flat ironing, blowing and brushing; but nothing is keeping it down! Help! What can I do to have it lay flat without toomuch product?

    • SBH says:

Hi Brooke: Sounds like you may need to set up a consultation with a professional stylist. But check out the special Salon Talk section of SBH’s November issue on stands now! Another reader wanted to know how to create a fully smooth style and one of our salon professionals answered her coif query. Best of luck!

  6. Aaliyah says:

I recently took out my micro braids that grew my hair very long. It is now passed shoulder length. I wear a wrap now and while i daiyl oil my hair, even if I apply a small amount of oil, my hair becomes very greasy and heavy. What am I doing wrong? Should I not oil it as much or what? I am also aware that having a silk headscarf and pillow will help my hair grow but I am oly 16 years old and I cannot afford either lol. Are there any other substitutions for them?

    • SBH says:

Hi Aaliyah: Be careful you’re not over-moisturizing your hair. Your scalp produces oil naturally, and you could be adding too much oil by adhering to a daily regimen. Try oiling your hair every other day or every few days when you wash your hair. As for the scarf, try looking for a satin hair bonnet. You may be able to find an inexpensive version at your local beauty supply store or drugstore.

  7. Pertha says:

I have super thick hair I’m mixed with white and black and I keep my hair short (now) because it’s so thick. Also, when I put oil in it my hair does not appeared to feel or look like oil was applied. I have also had it thin out and it has grown back thicker. I had people come up to me and ask if I was wearing a wig. NO!!! it’s mine Hair!!!! LOL

  8. Kayla says:

My hair fell out from getting a perm and left it medium length. Im trying to grow it back to my shoulder length I have used everything Ex.Doo grow and all that does is make my hair more thick. What products could I use to get my length back.

    • SBH says:

Hi Kayla: The key to hair growth lies in a good foundation, which includes eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Also, consult your physician regarding the use of hair vitamins containing B6, folic acid and other nutrients designed strengthen the hair.

  9. Samarie says:

Hey, my name is Samarie, and I’ve been cutting my hair on and off for the past three years or so. Recently it has started to grow back out, but it’s getting to that awkward point where it’s too long to lay down for long and look good, bust too short to really do a lot with. The olny person who can do much with it is my hairdresser, but I’m only 16, and I don’t have money to keep going back every week. Do you guys know any hairstyles that I could keep in my hair for a good while, so that I can still look good while it’s growing out? Is weave the answer. Any imput wold help, thanks!

    • SBH says:

Hi Samarie: If you like the way your hairstylist styles your coif, ask her for some tips on how you can recreate the look at home. Keep in mind, although a weave may offer you more style options, it also requires proper maintenance just like your natural tresses do.

  10. Erica says:

Hi my name is Erica I got a very bad trim that turned into a hair cut from H*** about 3 years ago and my hair will not grow it keep breaking at the ends what can I do to get it growing again

    • SBH says:

Hi Erica: When your hair is not growing, take it as a sign that you need make your strands stronger. The best way to do this is by eating healthy and drinking plenty of water. In addition, try using hair vitamins containing nutrients like B6 and folic acid, which are designed to make your hair more durable.
