AMAZING UPDOS

Bring the updo from night to day with effortlessly chic styles that add polish to your everyday look. Try a side braid, ponytail or bun for classy va-va-voom!

PRETTY PLAIT

PRETTY PLAIT

Hey there, red-carpet diva! Warm brown strands are gathered to one side and braided to create a sweet and sexy profile, while voluminous side bangs complete the snip.

Get the look: Natural strands are shampooed, conditioned and blow-dried. Then, 12″, 16″ and 18″ pre-shaded extensions are sewn in, starting at the nape, leaving Natural hair out at the crown and sides. Blonde-shaded extensions act as highlights and added into the top.

FEATHERED PONY

FEATHERED PONY

Long chocolate tresses are pulled to one side and secured in a partial ponytail, leaving ends free for a free spirited take on the classic updo.

Get the look: Natural strands are shampooed and conditioned before being molded. Then, using 12″ and 14″ Remy extensions in a medium brown color, a Quick Weave is bonded in starting at the nape moving toward the crown, which is closed in a circular pattern.

RETRO GLAM

RETRO GLAM

Midnight-shaded tresses are fashioned into an old-school pouf and side braid for a silhouette that’s on the front page of fashion! Copper highlights complete the look.

Get the look: Prior to styling, hair is shampooed and conditioned. Smooth strands are parted into two sections, and crown lengths are shaped over a foam piece to create a retro-glam pouf. Longer tresses at the back are secured and braided at the nape.

    • SBH says:

Sorry LP we don’t have Lenny’s daughter on our cover–it’s Zoe Saldana on the cover of the latest issue of SBH, our Sept/Oct issue!

  2. susan j. maclin says:

I live in columbia, south carolina and summers are very hot and humid. I have clients that like to wear wigs between visits and many who wear dreadlocks. Sometimes the heat causes my clients to have a mildew smell in the hair. It is a smell that cannot be shampooed away. I recently tried something different. I used a stimulating shampoo with tea tree oil, sat the client under the dryer for 10 mins. rinsed and applied an astringent to the hair, combed it through, rinsed, then conditioned. The hair didn’t smell anymore and had a beautiful sheen.

Here’s the news, Grace…You’ve got to allow some time for not only your hair to grow back but for any product you’re using to work. From what you tell us, it sounds like you’ve tried a lot of products but are short on patience and want to see growth results fast so you you’re not allowing the products to do their thing. Consult with your stylist and formulate a game plan for nurturing new growth–via you styling regimen, product use, etc. And, pick up SBH for some fabulous tips to get you back on track with your coif.

  8. aveysha says:

i cut my hair 3 months ago and i want to grow back but nothing i do helps and i cant do anthing to it because im still not use to a short especially when the back is shorter then the front

    • SBH says:

Hi aveysha Trust us, we’ve all been there: trying to grow out a not-in-love-with-it short cut. If you want to regain length, you’ve got to put yourself on the path to a good care regime which includes a healthy diet, gently styling and moisturizing/conditioning products. To ease the time while you wait for lengths to grow out, why not re-set your thinking and consider this time the ideal window of opportunity to experiment with hair accessories, clip-in pieces, etc.?

  9. Jennifer says:

Hello. I have a few pointers for silky hair. I have spent 18 months in Iraq where i was forced to become my own stylist but with limited hair care supply. I stuck with one main product-Olive Oil relaxers, conditioners, etc. Once you relax your hair NEVER USE GREASE!! It weighs the hair down and sweats out the scalp. Use conditioner and wrap your with Johnson’s Baby Oil. Use only a little in the palm of your hand and rub around your hair once its already wrapped. Or you can just use a conditioning sheen spray and wrap hair with a silk, polyester, or nylon scarf-nothing with mesh holes or your natural hair oil will absorb in your pillow.

  10. Sherry says:

Hello, I need to wear my hair back a few times a week in the winter and sometimes in the summer(I’m a basketball official). So I wear the pony tails with the combs a lot, my hair is medium length I also use Black&Sassy smoothing cream. But my questions is, is wearing the pony tail putting stress on my hair? I had it cut for a few years and now I’m letting it grow out. I’m told by my beautician that I have soft hair, but I feel as though it’s thinning because I am getting up in age(50). But I find the pony tail convient. When I’m not wearing the pony tail, I wrap it and sit under the dryer and wear it straight or I’ll us my In-Styler and while it’s damp dry and curl it. Any suggestions for other hair styles for medium length hair?

    • Kelli says:

When I was growing my hair out, and got to the medium length stage, I found that it was easier for me to maintain my hair by roller setting it. The roller sets usually lasted for about a week and when the curls would loosen I played with different hair accessories to keep it fresh. I would also wash and towel dry my hair, and braid it into cornrows or twist it. Once it was dry I would take out the braids or twist and finger comb it, again playing with different hair accessories. I did this for a while. It’s important not to over process your hair and to know how to properly maintain your hair, limiting use of heating elements, chemicals, or anything that could stress your tresses. Also making sure to keep your ends trimmed is very important.

    • SBH says:

Hi Sherry: We think you know the answer to your hair dilemma…Wearing your hair in a ponytail may stress out your strands—especially if they’re already fine in texture. Consider trying a wet set to add volume and texture to your coif. For more style ideas, don’t forget to pick up the August issue of SBH on sale now!
