TIP OF THE MOMENT
Take the time to weigh your options when you’re looking for a new hue. Once you apply a really dark shade, lifting your haircolor could take time, especially if you want to go all the way to a platinum hue from a basic black haircolor. Experiment with wigs to see if a deep hue is right for you and know what you’re getting into before you commit to a new shade!

I am hav a darker brown skin tone and I want to die my hair. Is my skin tone too dark for the Rihanna red hair color? And whn choosing a hair color does it matter about your skin tone?
Hi Avery: Skin tone plays an important factor in choosing a haircolor. Women with warm skin tones can pull off blonde and red shade. To determine if you have a warm or cool skin tone, take a look at the veins in your arms under a natural light. If your veins look green, you have a warm skin tone. Another way to see if the color would look good is to hold a few red color swatches against your skin tone. Set up a consultation with your colorist to determine the best shade of red for you!
I wan to lighten my hair for the summer (currently a dark brown). I would love to do an auburn or light honey-ish brown but I am so afraid of it not looking right on me. My skin tone is a light/medium brown. Can anyone help figure out what would look best with my skin?
Hi Tiffany: One of the ways to find out which haircolors look best with your skin tone is to look at the veins in your arms under a natural light. Green veins indicate a warm skin tone, while blue veins mean you have a cool skin tone. Warm skin tones look great in golden blonde or copper red, while ash blondes look nice on cool skin tones. Either way, you may also want to set up a consultation with a professional colorist to find your best shade match. Also, remember that lifting your haircolor more then two shades in a single process could cause damage to your hair. Be patient and happy coloring!
I just picked up the June/July issue and Summer’s sexiest hair shades are hot. I’m dying to know what brand and shades used to achieve the Cherry Bomb color!
Hi Karen: We’re working on an answer for you. In the mean time, you may want to clip the photo and take it to your colorist. Keep in mind, salon professionals often mix a few shades to achieve the exact hue you want. You may not be able to achieve a custom color at home.
Okay I would love to color my hair for the summer but I am unsure of what color I should go for the summer. I am bi-racial so I am really yellow, but I will darken up throughout the summer. My hair is a ebony brown…very dark…thinkin about what what color would look good with my skin color (like I said Im yellow).
Hi Toni: Women with red to golden undertones look great as blondes and redheads. However, know that lifting your haircolor may be a slow process in order to maintain the integrity of your hair. You may also want to look to bi-racial celebrities like Leona Lewis and Halle Berry, who have both worn variations of blonde shades in their hair.
Hi! I moved to another state last year and I was wearing a short style. Since I’ve been here I have been wearing braids. I get them done every 3 months& let my hair rest 2 weeks in between. 3 months ago I relaxed my hair& rebraided it. I want to wear my own hair but I have thinning around my edges as well as my hair. What do u recommend for that?
Hi Simone: You may want to give your hair a rest from wearing braids, as the style may be causing tension on your edges, resulting in the thinning you see. Schedule a visit with your stylist, who may be able to help you choose different looks to help disguise your thin edges. It will also help to get a complete hair and scalp analysis to better understand how to combat thinning and breakage.
I will be change my hair style at the end of June…but I want a red/orange color where it give me that reddish/orange color….I thinking the Cherrywood color would give me look I am look for…But I think it would be to Red….Can someone help with a band that would give me the color I need…thank you
Hi Chriseta: There are so many great brands on the market! If you are interested in coloring your hair at home, visit your local beauty supply store and compare boxes. Read all the information on each box and don’t be afraid to ask the sales person for help. However, keep in mind that a salon professional has the skills to help you achieve the exact shade of red/orange you’re looking for. Professional colorists often mix a few hues together to get to your desired shade.

Hi Chandra: We’re working on answer for you—visit soon!
Well I dyed my hair sometime ago and my hair broke so now I wear quick weaves and has been for many years. As a result of that my sides also broke and now they won’t grow back!! Please help what should I use???
Hi Nikki: You may want to give your edges a rest from the extensions, but we also suggest checking out the articled titled “Fine Hair Fixes” in the June/July issue of SBH—the one with Keri Hilson on the cover. Also, to combat the breakage, make sure your hair is getting plenty of moisture by developing a weekly conditioning regimen and adding extra moisture (with a leave-in conditioner or hot oil treatment) when needed.
I love this, I’ve been changing my hair color since I was 18(33 now) all of 2010 I was honey blonde, January 1st I changed up to strawberry blonde, April I did the two tone a darker honey blonde on the bottom and strawberry blonde on top. I just love color but I make sure I take care of my hair because I like it attached to my scalp. I don’t change my hair color when my favorite celebrity does I just go with whatever mood I’m in. I do look at Keyshia Cole and Rihanna for ideals; this year I love Keyshia color but I would want to mix in another color!
You go, Carisa! Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the new June/July issue of SBH—on stands this week—for more color inspiration
