Dawn-Lyen Gardner

They say our hair can mirror our emotions. And that’s never been truer than with basketball-wife-turned-sugar-farm-owner “Charley Bordelon,” portrayed by actress Dawn-Lyen Gardner, on the OWN-TV drama Queen Sugar. “Hair was a huge conversation, actually, and it continued to be through the season,” recalls the actress about the hit drama’s first season. With the show’s return for its second season on June 20th, we revisit our convo about style with the Julliard-trained star.

Once “Charley” moves back home to Louisiana, a sleek and simple style was needed—but still glamorous. Dawn-Lyen dubbed this style “farm chic.”

Television Tresses
Actress Dawn-Lyen Gardner really took hair into consideration when creating her character. “I met with [celebrity hairstylist] Kiyah Wright and we talked about how we wanted that ‘Hollywood look’ to be for the first episode. I tried on different hairpieces, some of them were extremely short and chic, it was a journey. [The resulting] piece was the defining look for [our] first episode.” As Dawn-Lyen’s character “Charley” changed—her hair had to change, too, to make for a overall realistic and relatable character. “For Black women, hair is such a part of our identity. So how we choose to wear our hair, our relationship with our hair, what we think about other peoples’ hair—it’s a huge part of our world.”

Dawn-Lyen herself is a Naturalista. When it comes to maintaining her Natural hair on set she had a lot of help. “My hair is Natural and I’m so grateful to Caprice Green, Department Head Hairstylist on Queen Sugar, because she is a big part of how I kept my hair healthy…My hair is actually curly and I don’t have a relaxer.”
