Lupita Nyong’o Is Writing A Children’s Book!

Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o will be writing her first children’s book entitled “Sulwe,” (set to debut sometime in January 2019), for children between the ages of 5 and 7. “Sulwe” means “star” in Lupita’s native language Luo. The story takes place in Kenya and focuses on young Sulwe who has the darkest skin in her family, a fact that makes her intensely uncomfortable and looking for ways to lighten her skin. The young girl will go on a playful journey through the night sky to redefine her perception of beauty.

This story is important to the Black Panther actress, because she reveals she has had her own struggles with colorism growing up. Lupita has stressed that she wants this picture book to be for young children because that is the age when “you learn all the things that you spend the rest of your life trying to unlearn.” “Sulwe” may not fix all of colorisms problems, but it’s a step in the right direction for beautiful dark-skinned girls to see themselves in a positive light.
