This Girl Is On Fire

Sixteen-year-old Chicago native Glennita Williams is mindful of the sacrifices of our troops and their families. And in this spirit, at the age of 11, she started America’s Guardian Angels. Her foundation gives support to deployed soldiers by providing them with snacks, care items, books—and hundreds of pounds of Hostess Twinkies. Glennita is just one of the “Making a Difference” Girls (M.A.D.) award recipients at this year’s Black Girls Rock! Ceremony (to be aired Nov. 4 at 7PM/ET).

Glennita’s inspiration for starting America’s Guardian Angels began in May 2008 when her friend’s father was deployed to Iraq. She emailed him as to what he needed and he told her he was craving some Hostess Twinkies. Glennita thought he was not the only soldier craving for something sweet from home and with the help of her teacher and classmates they formed “Operation Twinkie.” In 10 days they collected and shipped more than 1000 Twinkies to Iraq. The scope of her support for our troops grew when she asked her entire school to assist in collecting care items for veterans in the local VA hospital. This hospital visit changed her life as Glennita saw the soldiers’ sacrifice of losing limbs and other body parts in order to protect this country, and she wanted to do something more. In November 2009 Glennita founded America’s Guardian Angels. “America is a great country and we have great people such as our servicemen and women that helps this nation to be great,” shares this amazing teen. “Our safety and freedom has a valuable price that our troops and their family are paying. For this reason America’s Guardian Angels is determined to remember their courage and sacrifice.” Brava!
