Style & Substance

AThe official book launch party for Chicago broadcasting legend Merri Dee was filled with VIPS who turned out in support of the beloved media icon and her memoir, “Merri Dee: Life Lessons On Faith, Forgiveness & Grace.” Sophisticate’s Black Hair attended last night’s event held at The Museum of Broadcast Communications and sponsored by Fifth Third Bank. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White were among the dignitaries present who spoke about their admiration for Ms. Dee’s philanthropic work with the community. Upon taking the podium to greet guests, Ms. Dee was met with applause and she talked briefly about her book, promising readers: “I have stuff in this book…I’ve shocked myself.” With 40+ years in radio and television broadcasting, Ms. Dee started her career when few women of color were on the air. Her pioneering work in broadcasting has been credited for opening the doors for other women in high-profile on-air roles, including Oprah Winfrey.

Celebrity makeup artist Earl Nicholson earned a special “shout out” from Ms. Merri Dee during her remarks. (SBH loves a lady who gives credit to her glam squad!)

Among the guests were State Senator Toi Hutchinson (center) pictured with Nathaniel A. Pendleton, Sr. and Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, parents of slain Chicago teen Hadiya Pendleton. A special scholarship in Hadiya Pendleton’s name, established by Fifth Third Bank, was announced at the event.
