SBH BLOG:                                                       Living Like A Queen

WEBQueen Afua - photo WEB1Internationally renowned holistic health specialist Queen Afua knows how to stay beautiful on the inside and out. For nearly 30 years, she has spread her message of living a holistic lifestyle through TV and radio appearances and her holistic living tour. Her mission—teaching the art, science and joy of natural living—has reached notable celeb clients such as Stevie Wonder and Erykah Badu. SBH got the chance to chat with Queen Afua and get the details on her Natural coif, plus how living a holistic lifestyle can help your mane…

How can living a holistic lifestyle help maintain our beauty?
What is going on with our hair—if it’s damaged, itching, etc.—what’s happening is internal. So, if we’re doing our internal cleansing and repairing our inner body, then the outer body—skin, teeth, hair—that will be healthy. So because [our bodies are] 75 percent liquid, make sure to have eight glasses of water [a day]. Another thing is circulation. Circulation increases the blood flow, and when the blood is healthy, the scalp and hair are healthy. And how do we increase the blood flow—through movement. Find your favorite movement, whether it is aerobics or cycling, power walking, yoga…that will help you get the circulation up. Eat and drink your veggies.

Can you tell us about your Natural hair?
I started locing my hair when I was 16 years old. Before that, I was pressing my hair, and the chemicals and the constant pressing caused stress on the hair. And I know many women are doing that, and that’s okay, but even if your hair is in its Natural form, the type of work that you do internally will help you strengthen the longevity of your hair so it won’t fall out. I chose Natural hair, and I just stayed within the Natural hair flow.

Do you have any particular products that you use?
One of the products I use is clay. For hair health, you can do this with clay: once a week, wash your hair with rejuvenation clay and you wrap your mane for two hours. As the clay dries out, it’s putting minerals in [your hair] and pulling out congestion and keeping the follicles open so they are not all clogged up so the hair can continue to grow.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I have an affirmation that I give everyone and this is what I live by: The power to heal is within and we have the power to heal…Don’t give up and don’t stop, once you get on your path, just keep walking for what you are about to discover is so great.
