After hearing Bri Babineaux’s YouTube video that became an overnight sensation, it’s easy to see there’s something special about her voice. Here, the young gospel singer chats with SBH about her new single, style moves, and more…
What’s the inspiration behind your single, “I’ll Be The One?”
The single is about giving God your all and being better than you were before. In essence of how many times He’s had my back, it’s a vow to Him that I have His back and I won’t let him down. In this song, I’m letting him know he can always count on me. It’s a love song to God pouring out my innermost thoughts and feelings to Him and just letting Him know that whatever He needs me to do, I’ll do it.
What can fans expect from your upcoming album?
They can expect me to be diverse. I’m a worshipper at heart so it’s going to have beautiful, diverse songs. The album is [slated] to come out Fall 2015.
Can you tell us about the YouTube video that went viral?
I didn’t know my friend was recording me that night we were singing. I was going through a lot of things at that time, and I was invited to a worship session. At first, I wasn’t going to go, but I made myself go. I started singing a song called “My Hands Are Lifted Up” and I transitioned into “Make Me Over” Again by Tonex. As I began to sing that song, I began to release things that I was going through—my hurt, my pain and things people couldn’t see.
Did you expect the video to become so popular?
“My friend was recording and he posted it to Facebook at 2am. I didn’t really look into it because people would post videos of me singing in church all the time and nothing really happens. The next morning, I woke up and my inbox was flooded! I had so many friend requests from people all over the world. I was thinking, ‘What is going on?’ I have to give God the glory because I know that this is all Him. I’m truly humbled.”
We love your hair! Can you describe your current hairstyle?
I’m rocking the Natural look. I’m a curly girl.
How do you get such defined curls?
[My hair] is naturally defined, but I use different products. I just started doing a protein treatment where I’ll crack an egg and put it in my hair to rejuvenate it. I also diffuse my hair.
How often do you switch up your look?
Sometimes I’ll try extensions, but I’m really trying to stick to my Natural Hair. In the summer, I wear my hair curly and in the winter, I try to flat-iron it, but not too much because I don’t want all that heat damage.
What advice would you give to an aspiring singer?
You’re going to face many challenges and adversity, but don’t stop [singing]. Go for it with your whole heart. Do let anyone or anything come in your way. You call do all things, but you have to remember to keep God first. If you keep Him first, He’ll add everything to you and you’ll be fine.
