Beyond The Lights

Gugu and Gina (A)

We’re getting excited as we approach the debut of Beyond the Lights! The film tells the story of a pop superstar, Noni Jean dealing with the pressures of the music industry. “We’re telling a story of this young woman who is finding her self-worth and her identity,” says director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Hair plays a big role in the film as Noni transitions into her true self. In this SBH exclusive the director and actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw chat about their mane moves on and off screen.

What did you think of Noni’s different looks in the film?
Gugu: Well I have to first and foremost thank the wonderful “hair magician,” as I like to call her—Kim Kimble, who was the hair designer on the movie. It was amazing to work with her because we worked on many different scenes, different variations of Noni’s hair. We had purple hair, which at times was a full wig and at times it was partially my own hair at the front.

We also named the wigs! There was Purple Passion. There was Flash. There was a blonde wig in my very first fitting. I was like, ‘I look like Flash Gordon’ that’s how unfamiliar I was with seeing myself with blonde hair. And then there were variations of my natural hair.

Let’s talk about your Natural hair. How would you describe the texture of your hair?
Gugu: Curly!
Gina– I literally wash and go. I have two boys so after a day or two it’s pulled back into a ponytail because it’s much easier.

What hair products do you use?
Gugu: I kind of mix and match. Recently I’ve been using Moroccan Oil Products which have been good. A friend recommended that I use a natural coconut oil as a hair treatment—I tried that recently. I also have used Wen products. I like them because they’re organic and they smell great.
Gina: I’ve been using Mixed Chicks for a while so I go between that and Paul Mitchell. I was recently introduced to Aveda—they have a curl cream and it’s actually working really well.

What’s the best hair advice you’ve ever gotten?
Gina: Don’t wash your hair everyday.
Gugu: With my job, my hair gets played around with a lot so when I’m not working, I give my hair a rest. I give my hair a holiday! I let it dry naturally and I don’t do anything with it. I give it a vacation. Give your hair a vacation every once and a while.  I don’t always maintain my hair. Because of the work I do changing into different characters it can be very challenging. In real life, I keep my hair very simple. I try to get it trimmed regularly.

We caught up with celebrity hairstylist Kim Kimble to get the inside scoop on working as the hair designer for the film Beyond The Lights.

How did you decide to give the Noni character purple hair?
Director Gina Prince Bythewood’s vision was for Noni to have purple hair. When she mentioned it to me, of course I loved the challenge of that and it’s right on trend with what’s happening now. Everyone is wearing color. Blues, purples, reds…color is really making a statement right now in hair and fashion.

How did you style actress Gugu Mbatha Raw’s Natural hair?
She has a soft texture, so you can’t use anything too heavy. When styling her hair, I used a curl product and diffused it as well.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to go Natural?
Natural hair is very big right now. I even started growing out my relaxer. I love the versatility of it.
As far as styling, you can set you hair. It takes a while for your natural texture to come through because when you straighten out your hair you lose a lot of curl. Twist outs and rods sets are great for women who want to transition.
Also, the key to having great Natural hair is hydration. Use products that hydrate your hair! Do masks and treatments on natural hair. You should definitely sleep on silk pillowcases and Wrap your hair with a silk scarf.

Be sure to check out Beyond the Lights in theaters on November 14.
