Letter A

itchy scalp

 Q

My scalp itches a lot and my hair sheds a bit. It looks like my split ends come right back whenever I cut them. Do you have any style suggestions for me?
—Ellie

 A

Deep moisturizing conditioners, or hot oil treatments to address the scalp as well as the hair, are a good idea. A great trendy cut will trim away any damaged hair and will give you a fresh start. Check out Sophisticate’s Black Hair for some terrific style ideas. Take the pictures you’ve cut from the magazine to the salon and be sure to have a thorough conversation with your stylist.

Letter B

hairline concern

 Q

My hair is very thin around the front. What can I do or use to help grow it out?
—Danielle

 A

Often female frontal hair thinning can be caused by high-tension hairstyles such as tight braids or ponytails. Changing hairstyles allows the hair to grow normally once more, unless the damage has gone on for too long. In addition to changing hairstyles, you can also look for nutritional supplements with all-natural growth stimulators like Biotin-B6 and folic acid.

Letter C

cut dilemma

 Q

I have naturally curly hair and sometimes I perm it. I want a choppy short cut but I’m afraid it won’t look right because it will not lay flat. What should I do?
—Keema

 A

Be sure to have your hair cut by a stylist who is known for great cuts on highly textured hair. Your stylist will know whether your hair will need to be relaxed to maintain a smooth and silky look. However, keep in mind that there are stylists who can achieve the look without relaxing, too.
